The UN General Assembly, in a resolution released Thursday evening, called for an “immediate” withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and called for a “just and lasting” peace on the eve of the first anniversary of the start of the war.
The resolution received 141 votes in favor, 7 against, and 32 abstentions, including China and India.
A day after China’s foreign minister visited Moscow and pledged to deepen partnership with it, Beijing abstained in the vote, the fourth time it has abstained from participating in such a vote since the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on Feb. 24. last year.
Countries that voted against this resolution: Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Mali, Nicaragua, Syria and Eritrea.
Commenting on the resolution, US delegate to the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield said that the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “by an overwhelming majority.”
As for the mission of the European Union to the UN, they said that the international community stands for a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter.
The British Mission to the UN praised this decision and said: “The world supports Ukraine, and Russia must stop its aggression and put an end to this war.”
The UN resolution was issued on the eve of the first anniversary of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
