According to Iranian media and the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), a strong earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck near the Turkish-Iranian border late on Saturday, destroying houses in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan.

“According to the preliminary observations of the Fars correspondent, the number of destroyed houses and buildings in the city of Khoi is relatively high,” the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), according to EMSC. Iranian media reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred in the Iranian province of Western Azerbaijan.

Iranian emergency officials said rescue teams were sent to the area and hospitals were put on alert, state media reported.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said no damage or casualties were reported in Van Province, which borders Iran.

Relevant AFAD teams are still conducting field work to determine damage in the area, AFAD President Yunus Sezer said on Twitter.
