Apple Moves End Call Button in Newest iOS 17 Developer Version
Apple has moved the end call button back to the middle of the screen in the newest developer version of iOS 17 released on Tuesday.
The move reverses a change that Apple had been considering over the summer, as reported by last week.
Previous beta versions of iOS 17 had relocated the red “End Call” button to the lower right-hand corner instead of the centered position it had held for years. However, in the most recent developer beta, the red end call button is now centered vertically among three buttons near the bottom of the screen.
Apple’s potential user interface modification is not yet finalized and is currently only visible in the latest developer beta. Apple’s developer and public beta release programs are designed for software developers and early adopters to test the new iPhone operating system and identify bugs before the official release in the fall along with new iPhones.
For years, Apple’s end call button has remained in a relatively consistent location. However, in the newest version, Apple is revamping its call ID function by introducing a new feature called “contact posters.” This feature allows users to choose the photo that appears when they call another iPhone user. As the new photos occupy most of the screen during a phone call, Apple has moved the buttons to the bottom.
In the summer of 2021, Apple contemplated a similar change to Safari, relocating the URL bar to the bottom of the page for improved ergonomics on larger screens. However, Apple reversed some of its planned changes and provided users with the option to move the URL bar back to the top before the official software release. Over the past few years, Apple has also shifted the placement of push notifications to the bottom of the iPhone’s screen.
