A special tribunal set up by the United Nations confirmed on Thursday that one of the most wanted individuals involved in the Rwandan genocide was arrested in South Africa after 22 years on the run.

The UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals said Fulgens Kaishima was arrested on Wednesday in Paarl, a small town about 30 miles east of Cape Town.

The court indicated that “the wanted man is suspected of organizing the murder of more than 2,000 people.”

“He was arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Judicial Investigation Team and the South African authorities,” the court added.

“Vulgens Kaishima has been on the run for over 20 years and his arrest ensures that he is brought to justice for his alleged crimes,” Sergei Brammerts, prosecutor for the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, said in a statement.
