Authorities in Peru have said at least 36 people have died as a result of landslides from heavy rains in the south of the country, warning of a large number of victims.

On Monday, local media, citing civil defense officials, reported that dozens of people were also injured in the landslides.

The disaster affected about 2,000 families. Rescue work continues, rescuers and police are looking for the missing.

Landslides began in the Arequipa region of southern Peru since Sunday as heavy rains hit the region.
