Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro today, Monday, commented on the riots staged by some of his supporters in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia.
Bolsonaro said on Twitter that he denies the allegations made without evidence by current Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
“Throughout my tenure, I will abide by the four lines of the constitution that respect and protect laws, democracy, transparency and our sacred freedom,” he added, defending the right to organize “peaceful protests.”
The governor of the Federal District of Brasilia, Ibanez Rocha, an ally of Bolsonaro, apologized to President Lula in a video clip. He called those responsible for the looting of public buildings “real saboteurs” and “real terrorists.”
“We tracked all these movements together with the Minister (of Justice) Flavio Dino… we never thought that these demonstrations would take on such proportions,” he said.
Bolsonaro’s other allies distanced themselves from the violence, including Valdemar Costa Neto, head of Bolsonaro’s party. Costa Neto lamented this “sad day for the Brazilian people”.
A human wave of demonstrators dressed in yellow and green attacked the country’s main energy facilities in Brasilia, images reminiscent of supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s assault on Congress in Washington in January 2021.
