Burkina Faso’s regional governor and army said in separate statements on Monday that at least 28 soldiers and civilians were killed in two attacks by gunmen on Sunday and Monday in the country.
The army said a combat unit in Valangoto, in the north of the country close to its border with Niger, was attacked, killing 10 soldiers, two volunteers and one civilian.
Bodies of 15 attackers
The army said the bodies of 15 attackers were found after the attack.
In a separate statement on Monday, Colonel Jean-Charles de Yanapono Somme, governor of the Cascades region in the south of the country near the Ivory Coast border, said the bodies of 15 people, all civilians, had been recovered following Sunday’s attack.
He added that the militants stopped two vehicles containing eight women and 16 men. According to him, the women and one man were released.
“On January 30, the bodies of the dead were found near the village of Lengikoro,” the report says.
