Military Intervention in Niger: ECOWAS Preparations Underway
Military sources in Nigeria have confirmed that preparations for a military intervention in Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are currently ongoing.
Rising Calls Against Military Intervention
Despite increasing diplomatic efforts and growing opposition to a military intervention in Niger, ECOWAS has not ruled out the use of force to restore democracy and facilitate the inauguration of President Mohamed Bazum.
Implementation of the Plan
Nigerian military sources have revealed that the plan, ratified in Accra, is being implemented and there have been no counter-orders for military intervention in Niamey. The option of restoring constitutional order by force remains an active and programmed course of action.
Deployment of Forces
Army chiefs are currently overseeing the deployment of forces, including their transportation through neighboring countries to designated bases and staging points.
ECOWAS Standby Force Composition
The ECOWAS standby force will consist of soldiers from Benin, Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea-Bissau. Ghana is also expected to participate in this joint military effort, with other countries potentially joining after training their forces.
Appointment of Field Commanders
Field commanders have already been appointed in most units to establish an operational control system that coordinates the location and actions of the deployed forces.
Fixed Date for Intervention
A senior officer, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that the intervention date has been set and no changes have been made so far.
