Egyptian Ministry of Labor Urged to Obtain Employment Contracts for Workers Abroad

Introduction

Representative Ahmed Ashour, Assistant Rapporteur of the Population Committee at the National Dialogue, suggested that the Egyptian Ministry of Labor obtain photocopies of employment contracts between an Egyptian worker and a foreign employer.

Increasing Remittances

Ashour added in his speech to the Committee on Public Debt, Fiscal Deficit and Financial Reform that workers abroad are required to transfer 50% of the cost of work through banks and legal methods into the country in order to increase remittances. He emphasized the importance of bringing hard currency into the country and highlighted the significant drop in Egyptians’ remittances abroad.

Inclusion of Informal Economy

Ashour also suggested the need for a law with incentives to include the informal economy in the formal economy. He emphasized that the public debt is a result of accumulated debts from previous years.

Discussion on Public Debt

The National Dialogue Public Debt Committee held a discussion session where representatives of political parties, movements, and members of the House of Representatives and the Senate presented proposals and speeches to address the issue of public debt and budget deficit.
