Introduction

The England-based charity, YoungMinds, has issued a warning about the country’s growing mental health crisis among young people. They have highlighted the fact that the number of juveniles referred to emergency mental health services has tripled in the past four years.

Urgent Referrals on the Rise

According to the analysis of NHS England data conducted by YoungMinds, there were 3,732 urgent referrals to mental health services for individuals under the age of 18 at the end of May. This is a significant increase compared to the 1,322 urgent referrals registered for the same age group in May 2019.

Call for Government Action

Laura Bunt, the chief executive of YoungMinds, has urged the government to take immediate action to address this escalating crisis. She emphasized that the statistics are a clear indication of a broken system and a government that fails to listen to the demands for change from young people. Bunt stated, “We are now in a mental health emergency and the government needs to recognize the magnitude of this crisis.”

Long Wait Times and Inadequate Support

Unfortunately, many young people have to endure long waits of months or even years to receive the help they desperately need. Additionally, a significant number of young individuals are told that they do not qualify for referral to mental health services. This situation is unacceptable, as no young person should be left waiting while their mental health deteriorates.
