European Commission President Urges EU Countries to Accept Refugees

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on EU countries to accept refugees during a visit to the island of Lampedusa, in which she was accompanied by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Von der Leyen’s Plea for EU Member States

Von der Leyen said: “Illegal immigration is a problem that requires a European response, and I call on European Union member states to accept some of the thousands of migrants arriving on the Italian island of Lampedusa.”

About Lampedusa and the Migrant Crisis

The island of Lampedusa is located less than 150 kilometers off the coast of Tunisia and is one of the first stops for migrants crossing the Mediterranean in hopes of reaching Europe.

Each summer, tens of thousands of migrants cross the sea aboard often rickety boats in dangerous operations that have killed more than 2,000 people since January.

Current Situation in Lampedusa

However, Lampedusa has not seen as much pressure as before, with most of the 11,000 migrants arriving in Italy since Monday, according to the Interior Ministry. As a result, the Italian Red Cross reception center, designed to accommodate 400 people, was unable to accommodate more people.
