The first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the United States has arrived in Germany as part of an effort to help the country replace the energy it previously received from Russia.

The Maria Energy tanker has arrived at the North Sea port of Wilhelms Haven, where its cargo of liquefied natural gas will be converted back into gas at a special floating station that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opened last month.

Environmental activists said they planned to protest the tanker’s arrival to protest Germany’s imports of fossil fuels, especially gas.

German gas storage inventories rose by more than 90 percent earlier this year as unusually high temperatures in much of Central Europe reduced gas demand.
