German Foreign Ministry Calls for Continued Mediation in Niger

Introduction

The German Foreign Ministry has called for continued mediation with the military council in Niger following the failure of a West African delegation to bring the government of ousted President Mohamed Bazum back to power in the country.

Mediation Efforts

“It is important that we give space to mediation efforts. We hope that they will lead to a successful conclusion, to a political solution,” a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said in Berlin on Friday.

Lifting of Curfew

Earlier, Niger’s military council lifted the curfew imposed in the country after the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazum and his seizure of power on the 26th of last month.

Reasons for the Overthrow

Notably, the former commander of the Presidential Guard, General Omar Abd al-Rahman Tiani, justified the overthrow of President Bazum on the grounds of economic and social insecurity in a country that is among the world’s poorest countries and is plagued by armed groups.
