On Tuesday, German prosecutors announced that a terrorist group had tried to kidnap the health minister and kill his bodyguards.
German prosecutors have accused “five suspects of belonging to a terrorist group of treason.”
Last December, thousands of German police conducted a series of raids around the country to arrest right-wing extremists from the Reichsburg movement who were seeking to overthrow the government through an armed coup.
The Reichsburger movement rejects Germany’s post-war constitution and calls for the overthrow of the government. The movement includes neo-Nazis, conspiracy theorists and gun advocates who reject the legitimacy of the modern German Republic.
Members of the movement also believe that Germany is ruled by the so-called “deep state”.
In recent years, the movement has become increasingly radical and is seen as a growing security threat. It is assumed that among the members of the newly created terrorist group there are former soldiers, so today, as part of the suppression of the movement, a search was carried out in one of the barracks.
According to German prosecutors, the detainees last year formed “a terrorist organization with the aim of overthrowing the existing state system in Germany and replacing it with their own system, which was already in the process of being created.” The suspects knew that their goal could only be achieved by military means and force.
