Mahsa Amini’s Death and Nationwide Protests

Mahsa Amini, originally from the Kurdish region, died on September 16, 2022, while in custody of Iran’s morality police in Tehran for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code for women.

Her death sparked protests across the country, with demands for the overthrow of Iran’s ruling government. The authorities responded with a brutal crackdown, resulting in hundreds of deaths and over 22,000 detentions, according to human rights groups.

Ongoing Discontent and Dress Code Enforcement

Although the protests subsided earlier this year, signs of widespread discontent persist. Following the protests, many women openly defied the dress code, prompting authorities to launch a new campaign to enforce it during the summer.
