CNN reported that half of the defendants in the case of former US President Donald Trump in Georgia have surrendered to the authorities.
Lawyers Turn Themselves In
According to the network, Trump’s three top lawyers – Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis – turned themselves in on Wednesday.
Charges Against Giuliani and Powell
Giuliani, one of Trump’s most prominent lawyers in 2020, is charged with 13 crimes, including violating state racketeering law and participating in various criminal conspiracies. Powell is also charged with seven state crimes, including violating Georgia’s anti-extortion law, conspiracy to rig an election, and other charges.
Other Defendants Surrender
Six others have turned themselves in so far, including pro-Trump attorney Kenneth Chesibrough, former Trump campaign attorney Ray Smith, former Georgia GOP chairman David Schaefer, former Kofi County GOP chairman Katie Latham, right-wing attorney John Eastman, and a surety Scott Hall.
Former President’s Arrest
The former president is due to turn himself in today, Thursday, where he will be arrested in the state of Georgia. Arrest on summons is standard criminal procedure in the US and usually takes about two hours while the relevant documents are processed.
Accusations by Fulton County District Attorney
Fulton County District Attorney Fanny Willis accused former President Donald Trump and 18 others of participating in schemes to interfere with the 2020 Georgia election.
Deadline for Defendants
All defendants must turn themselves in by the Friday noon deadline set by Willis when she delivered her sweeping indictment last week regarding attempts to undo Trump’s 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden.
