Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov: BRICS Expansion Strengthens Position within G20
Introduction
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes that the expansion of the BRICS group will strengthen its position within the G20. He emphasizes that Russia will coordinate its positions with the new BRICS members on international platforms.
Lavrov’s Statement
In a statement on the Moscow Kremlin Putin program, Lavrov stated:
“Of course, the position of the BRICS group will be strengthened after its expansion within the G20, because Saudi Arabia and Argentina are also part of the G20. As a result, the official division of the G20 into the G20 Group of Seven and the BRICS Plus group is becoming more realistic.”
“We will coordinate our positions with the new BRICS members at the United Nations, the G20, and other international platforms,” Lavrov added.
BRICS Summit
The most recent BRICS summit took place in Johannesburg on August 22-24, under the chairmanship of South Africa. The leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa attended the summit. Russia was represented by Lavrov, and Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the summit via a video conference.
During the summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa formally invited Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia to join the BRICS. The membership of these countries will come into effect on January 1. These six countries are among the 23 countries that have previously expressed a desire to join the BRICS.
