Yoga and Breathing Exercises Improve Lung Function in Adults with Asthma
Introduction
The analysis found that yoga and breathing exercises may help improve lung function in adults with asthma.
Study Findings
A new study shows that yoga and controlled breathing, along with aerobic exercise such as brisk walking or swimming, can actually improve patients’ lung performance.
A team from Henan Normal University in China analyzed the results of 28 studies involving 2,155 people with asthma and examined the effects of different types of exercise.
They found that breathing and relaxation techniques, yoga, and exercise help improve lung function.
Types of Techniques
Breathing techniques include diaphragm training, also known as “diaphragmatic breathing”, where each breath moves the belly rather than the chest.
Meanwhile, relaxation training focuses on recognizing tension in the mind and body, while yoga includes various movements to stimulate circulation.
Author’s Insight
Lead author Chuangtao Seng said: “Breathing training, combined with aerobic exercise and yoga, appears to be particularly beneficial, providing potential opportunities for effective treatments. These results should provide insight to healthcare providers prescribing exercise for adult patients with asthma to treat asthma.”
Call for Further Research
The study, published in the Annals of Medicine, calls for more trials to test different exercise methods in asthma patients.
