The International Monetary Fund called on capable countries to provide urgent assistance to Syria to deal with the damage from the devastating earthquake that hit its lands at dawn last Monday.
International Monetary Fund Director Kristalina Georgieva, in her speech at the World Summit of Governments held in Dubai, referred to the suffering inflicted on the Syrians by the scourge of war and the subsequent devastating effects of the recent earthquake, and called on the international community to urgently extend a helping hand to them.
Asked by a journalist at the summit about the need to ease sanctions that prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria, Georgieva replied: “The Syrians will not be able to last a few more days without shelter, food or water.”
Notably, Syria has been suffering from a US blockade and sanctions since 2003 under the so-called Syria Accountability Act.
As the recent earthquake hit Syrian and Turkish lands at dawn on February 6, US and Western officials rushed to call for urgent help and send rescue teams to Turkey, forgetting or turning a blind eye to the fact that Syria is in dire need of humanitarian assistance as it suffers from a blockade. preventing access to help.
However, the media hype generated on social media and Arab and international media prompted some humanitarian organizations to raise the urgent need to send aid to Syria, urging the international community to do so, but this aid has not reached the necessary level so far.
