Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Thursday in Brussels urged NATO to toughen its approach to Iran at a time when Iran is supplying Russia with drones that Moscow is using in the war in Ukraine.
“The crisis extends beyond Ukraine, and now the Iranian threat is approaching the threshold of Europe,” Herzog said during a visit to NATO headquarters.
He added: “The illusion of distance cannot continue. NATO must take the most decisive stance towards the Iranian regime, including economic, legal and political sanctions and credible military deterrence.”
The countries of the Western alliance have put pressure on Israel to take a tougher stance than Russia because of the war in Ukraine.
However, Israel refused to supply arms to Kyiv for fear of angering Moscow, which plays an important role in neighboring Syria.
“The terrible war continues to cause senseless human suffering and threaten the safety and well-being of millions,” Herzog said.
“We sympathize with the Ukrainians who are defending their homes and their country,” he added.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he had discussed “our support for Ukraine” with Herzog.
He added: “The Ukrainian people courageously defend their homeland, and NATO countries and its partners are doing their part to support their right to self-defense.”
Stoltenberg said the Duke’s visit was evidence of a “deep partnership” between the US-led military alliance and Israel.
Herzog mentioned strengthening cooperation on cybersecurity, threats from space, drones and the ability to deal with energy crises.
He said that the parties will sign a cooperation agreement “within two months, which will extend the period of cooperation and expand its scope.”
