Liberian President George Weah has announced that he will run for a second consecutive term in elections scheduled for October 2023.
“Dear Citizens, I will be writing to you shortly to renew the mandate you gave me six years ago,” the former football legend said in his official annual State of the Union address.
In this speech, which the country’s president is required to deliver before both houses of parliament every year in accordance with the constitution, Weah defended his result by saying: “Let me assure you that our nation is strong, stable and full of life … Our nation lives in peace and security, and we intend to do so.”
The 56-year-old president promised a second term full of opportunities for transformation and development, as well as to consolidate achievements.
George Weah, elected in the second round of the presidential election in December 2017, took office in January 2018.
