French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Palestinians and Israelis not to ignite a spiral of violence following two attacks in East Jerusalem and the killing of a Palestinian by an Israeli security official.
During telephone conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “the French president reminded everyone of the need for everyone to avoid taking measures that could fuel a cycle of violence,” the French president said in a statement.
The Élysée Palace said Macron “reiterated its willingness to facilitate the resumption of dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis.”
The French President expressed condolences to the Israeli people in connection with the “victims of the terrorist attack”, in which 7 Israelis were killed on Friday near a synagogue in East Jerusalem.
He again condemned the attack, calling it “despicable”, expressing France’s “full and complete solidarity with Israel in its war on terrorism” and reaffirming France’s “strong commitment to the security” of that country.
The parties also discussed the situation in the region, especially the progress of the Iranian nuclear program in violation of the international agreement reached in 2015.
Macron stressed the importance of showing “the necessary firmness in the face of increasingly troubling developments and lack of transparency on the part of the Iranians” in this matter.
