New Zealand Hit by 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake

New Zealand authorities announced that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the country’s southern coast on Wednesday (local time).

Details of the Earthquake

In a message on its website, the New Zealand Seismic Center said the earthquake occurred at 09:14 (2114 GMT Tuesday) and its epicenter was 124 km west of Christchurch and at a depth of 11 km.

Impact of the Earthquake

The center explained that about 15 thousand people reported feeling the earthquake. So far, no casualties or material damage have been recorded as a result of the earthquake.

Geological Significance

New Zealand is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where tectonic plates meet and their friction against each other leads to significant seismic and volcanic activity.
