President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has promised reforms aimed at combating corruption and foreign interference in the work of the European Parliament, which has recently been rocked by a high-profile corruption scandal.

“The events of the past month have demonstrated the need to build trust with the European citizens that we represent,” Metsola said at the start of the plenary meeting in Strasbourg.

“We will take steps to strengthen the fight against corruption and the means to combat foreign interference” in the European body, she added.

The speaker of parliament was expected to open his first plenary session in 2023 at his headquarters in Strasbourg in eastern France, formally announcing a series of measures including restricting former MPs’ access to parliament and restrictions on the registration of persons from outside the institution that meets , speaks or exerts pressure in Parliament.
