Brazilian authorities said on Monday that soccer star Neymar was fined 16 million reais ($3.33 million) for violating environmental regulations while building his waterfront mansion in the country’s southeast.
The luxury project violated regulations regarding the use and movement of fresh water sources, rocks and sand, which local authorities first said late last month and confirmed on Monday.
His residence is located in the town of Mangaratiba, on the southern coast of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.
The Mangaratiba Environmental Protection Authority said in a statement yesterday that environmental violations occurred “during the construction of an artificial lake in the palace.”
In addition to the fine, the case will be investigated by the local attorney general’s office, state civil police and the Environmental Protection Bureau, and other oversight agencies.
