Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that no tangible progress had been made in consultations on the creation of a security zone at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
Ulyanov added: “Unfortunately, during the consultations on the creation of a nuclear-safe zone in Zaporozhye, no significant progress was made.”
According to Ulyanov, the main reason for this situation is “the lack of an objective reaction from Ukraine to the proposals of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi.”
“Nevertheless, the CEO proceeds from the fact that the creation of a buffer zone is his top priority … as he continues to have many contacts on this topic,” Ulyanov continued.
“Let’s see what these efforts will result in. Grossi himself, as far as I know, hopes for a positive outcome,” the diplomat added.
Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper, not far from the city of Energodar. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity, the plant has six power units with a capacity of 1 gigawatt each.
Since March last year, the station has been guarded by the Russian army, and the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the move is necessary to protect and prevent the leakage of nuclear and radioactive materials.
The Ukrainian army continues to bomb Enerhodar and the territory of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant adjacent to the city on a daily basis.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the Kyiv regime seeks to create and seeks to deliberately provoke the creation of a threat of a nuclear catastrophe by continuing to deliberately bomb nuclear power plants.
