North Korea has created a unit responsible for working with solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Footage from last week’s military parade commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army, broadcast by North Korea Central Television, shows 4 military flags of a military unit specializing in intercontinental ballistic missiles, from the left side, the wife of North Korean leader Ri Seol-do walks on square.

One of the military flags has an image of a ballistic missile that was launched with a flame in a red circle. This military flag has been confirmed to be the one that hung on the front of the mobile launch platform carrying the new solid-propellant ICBM first unveiled at the February 8 military parade.

According to the analysis, North Korea has built a solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile weapon, although it has not yet tested the new type, possibly due to confirmation of its operability during cold launch tests.

A new solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile appeared with the banner of a military unit, which indicated the presence of a military unit responsible for its development, testing and operation.

This missile was transported at a military parade through a mobile launch platform that carries 9 axles and 18 wheels. It is believed that its length may be less than that of a modern Hwaseong-17 ICBM, which has a range of 22-24 meters. in length, with a movable launch platform carrying 11 axles and 22 wheels.

The director general of the Korea Defense and Security Forum, Shin Jong-woo, said that North Korea has a sufficient technical base, since the North has developed a solid-propellant intercontinental missile based on a cold-launch method based on the Bukguk Song-2 medium-range ballistic missile. .

He added that regarding the establishment of a military unit before a test launch, Pyongyang can test the performance by conducting a cold start test without starting a rocket engine using a launch pad similar to a solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile.

On the other hand, the banner of the military unit responsible for operations with the Hwaseong-17 ICBM was displayed on the front of the mobile launcher loaded with the Hwaseong-17 ICBM during a recent military parade.

The number 2022.11 was inscribed on the military flag, and it can be assumed that the unit responsible for operations with intercontinental ballistic missiles was created in November last year.

Another military banner belongs to the Main Missile Directorate and has the number 2016.4.30, which means the date the directorate was created.

The missile on the remaining flag, whose military unit name has not been confirmed, is similar to the color scheme of a long-range cruise missile launched by North Korea last January, suggesting that North Korea may also install a military unit in charge of cruise missile operations.

On February 13, North Korea’s Central News Agency reported that the country had “expanded and reorganized” many of its military units in line with the new security situation and assigned them operational combat missions.
