Paris Olympic Paratriathlon Test Event Canceled Due to Water Quality Concerns

Introduction

Paris Olympic organizers and other officials have canceled Saturday’s paratriathlon test event on the Seine River, citing new water quality concerns.

Event Changes

Instead, the competition has been upgraded to a dual race of running and cycling only, and the cancellation represents a new setback for organizers of the 2024 Summer Games and for the city’s ambitions to reopen the famous river for public swimming after next year’s Olympics.

Reason for Cancellation

The organizers said in a statement that swimmers entered the Seine River to compete on Thursday and Friday, but water quality results showed “significant discrepancies” in the hours leading up to Saturday’s event.

The statement added that officials from the World Triathlon, the Paris Olympics, the Municipality of Paris and the Paris region have jointly decided to cancel Saturday’s events “as a precautionary measure so as not to endanger the health and safety of athletes.”
