An opinion poll showed that 40 percent of Americans are satisfied with President Joe Biden’s China policy due to their concerns about Beijing’s influence.
And about 6 in 10 Americans surveyed expressed great concern about China, the world’s second-largest economy after the US, according to a poll by the Associated Press-Nork Center for Public Affairs Research.
Biden has focused his domestic platform on infrastructure and chip development as part of increased competition with China.
The poll showed that fears about the threat posed by Russia to the United States have receded, and the fear of China is now greater.
Biden sought to present relations with China as a competition rather than a larger geopolitical clash.
Last week, he said: “We are looking for a rivalry, not a conflict with China. We do not seek a new cold war. We will conduct this rivalry responsibly so that it does not escalate into a conflict.”
And Biden’s foreign policy approval ratings are broadly in line with opinions about his presidency as a whole, with a poll showing that 45% of American adults expressed satisfaction with Biden’s performance in general, and 55% of them were dissatisfied with him.
These percentages are consistent with previous percentages, as 41 percent praised the president at the end of January and 43 percent in December.
Fears about China’s global influence as a threat to the United States are similar to last year’s figures, but have risen relatively in recent years from 54 percent immediately after Biden took office and 48 percent in January 2020.
