Portuguese President Criticized for Comments on Woman’s Daughter’s Dress

Several Portuguese political parties have criticized comments made by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during his visit to Canada about a woman during an outing in Toronto regarding the cleavage of her daughter’s dress.

Comments Made by President

This was reported by the EFE newspaper, where the 74-year-old Portuguese president, while walking through Toronto’s Little Portugal neighborhood, stopped to talk to a woman and her daughter and sarcastically said: “The daughter is more beautiful than the mother,” then continued: “Your daughter could get the flu. Did you see the cutout on her dress?

Political Parties’ Response

Commenting on this, Rui Tavares, one of the founders of the Liberal Green Party, told the newspaper Publico that these statements do not reflect the responsibility of the President of the Republic “to defend the right of the people to independence and to respect the choice of its citizens.”

In turn, the representative of the People-Animals-Nature party, Ines de Souza Real, said: “We cannot forget that we live in a world where domestic violence is clearly visible. And where words spoken with good intentions can often be seen as legitimization behavior with other intentions.” Isabel Moreira, a supporter of the Socialist Party, also noted that this is “not a joke about cleavage” but rather that “sexism will kill us.”

President’s Clarification

The head of state himself did not agree that his comment was “sexist” and only clarified that his words meant that it was “cold” outside.

Previous Controversy

This is not the first time that the president of the republic, who took office in 2016, has found himself at the center of controversy. During a trip to the Portuguese region, Rebelo de Sousa offered a chair to a woman and then asked her, “Can this chair support you?”
