When it comes to fertility, the responsibility often falls on women, but as sperm counts drop worldwide, men need to understand that their fertility is far from being taken for granted.

According to a recent study, 53 countries reported low sperm counts, mostly in North America, Europe and Australia, where there was a massive drop of 50-60%.

So what could be behind this staggering sperm count?

Dr. Babak Ashrafi of Superdrug Online Doctor explained that while male fertility usually drops sharply between the ages of 40 and 45, there are other factors that can cause young men to experience fertility issues and even infertility, including including:

pressure

“Studies have shown that men who are frequently stressed are more likely to experience low testosterone levels, lower sperm counts, abnormal sperm production, and reduced sperm motility (a feature that allows sperm to swim),” says Dr. Babak. heightened tensions, including rising costs of living as an example.”

weight

Unfortunately, weight can also play a role, says Dr. Babak.

“High BMI is the cause of low sperm count and poor sperm quality and motility. This situation may have been exacerbated by the recent Covid pandemic, as lockdowns have reduced physical activity levels for many,” he explains.

Alcohol

Dr. Babak explains that drinking alcohol can “affect hormone levels and suppress testicular function.”

smoking

According to various studies, smoking is unhealthy for many reasons. Among them is that it “also causes a decrease in semen volume and sperm count,” according to Dr. Babak.

Diet

Dr. Babak notes that eating small amounts of fruits and vegetables can affect sperm performance, as can eating large amounts of fast food.

Lack of Exercise

Dr. Babak explains that poor mobility can be a problem for men too. He explains that “Active men show improved hormone levels and sperm production compared to less active men. Sperm analyzes of these individuals showed better proportions of shape, quantity, and mobility, among other healthier effects.”
