Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboun said on Tuesday the country should double its wheat production to reduce dependence on imports, in part by boosting yields from one acre to 3 tons instead of the current two tons.
Official figures show that Algeria, which is one of the world’s largest wheat importers, pays roughly $2.8 billion annually to supply about 9 million tons of wheat.
Tebbun said the turmoil in world grain markets showed that no country can be truly independent unless it produces its own wheat.
Data from the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture shows that the country produced 3.5 million tons of wheat in 2022.
