Ukraine and Russia released more than 200 prisoners of war during the last exchange before the New Year.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine had released 82 Russian soldiers, and Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, said Russia had handed over more than 140 Ukrainian troops.

Some of the 132 Ukrainian men and eight women who were released were wounded or fought defending the Black Sea port city of Mariupol and on Snake Island, Yermak said in a message on his Telegram page.

In recent months, the two sides have exchanged hundreds of captured soldiers in several prisoner exchanges, despite the complete breakdown of broader diplomatic talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

In September, Russia and Ukraine exchanged 200 prisoners of war through the mediation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and a diplomatic exchange with the leaders of the countries.
