Russia Expresses Concern Over Military Coup in Gabon
Russia has expressed deep concern over the military coup that took place in Gabon on Wednesday morning. They hope that the situation in the country will stabilize as soon as possible.
Earlier today, a military group announced the annulment of the election results and the dissolution of all institutions in Gabon. This action marked the end of President Ali Jungo’s regime. President Jungo had been re-elected to a third term with 64.27% of the vote in the recent presidential elections.
A Kremlin spokesman, in a statement to reporters, said, “The situation in Gabon is of deep concern and we are closely monitoring what is happening there. However, I prefer not to draw general conclusions at this time.”
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, also expressed concern in a press statement. She stated, “Moscow has received reports of a sharp deterioration in the internal situation in this friendly African country. We continue to closely monitor the situation and hope for its stabilization as soon as possible.”
