Russian Army Takes Control of City in Ukraine
On Saturday, the Russian army announced that it had taken control of a city in northeastern Ukraine, where Moscow troops have been advancing for weeks. This is in contrast to the situation on the southern front, where they are repelling a Ukrainian counterattack.
Novoselevsky Recaptured by Ukrainians in December
The Ministry of Defense stated in a Telegram message, “In the Kobyansky district, thanks to the operational and professional movements of the units, the city of Novoselevsky was taken.” It is worth noting that Ukrainians had recaptured this city from Russian troops in December 2022.
Increased Enemy Attacks in Kobyansk, Liman, and Svatovy
On Friday, the Ukrainian army reported facing attacks from Russian troops in the areas of Kobyansk, Liman, and Svatovy in the northeastern sector of the front. Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Gana Malyar said on Telegram, “The number of enemy attacks has increased. Fierce battles are going on.”
Russia’s Goal to Break Through Ukrainian Defenses
Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Gana Malyar stated that Russia’s goal is to “draw” Ukrainian forces into the areas of Kobyansk, Liman, and Svatovy and “break through the defenses.”
The Russian army announced that it had “launched offensive operations on a broad front” in the Kupyansk region, allowing it to “improve” its position.
City of Sergeevka Taken by Russian Troops
In late July, Russian troops announced that they had taken control of the city of Sergeevka near Liman.
The Ukrainian army has been conducting a massive counteroffensive in the south and east of the country since June, after receiving Western shipments of weapons. However, this attack has encountered strong Russian defense lines and has so far only succeeded in capturing a few villages.
