Fighting between the army and the RSF erupted suddenly in mid-April as military and civilian parties put the finishing touches on the internationally supported political process. This process was to culminate in elections within two years.

However, both sides disagreed on plans to integrate the Rapid Support Forces into the army, and the conflict flared up later.

While several regional, Arab and African initiatives have so far failed to launch a direct dialogue between the leaders of the two conflicting armed forces, just like dozens of ceasefires have failed to continue and maintain.
