Sweden Temporarily Relocates Embassy and Consulate in Iraq for Security Reasons

Sweden announced today, Friday, the temporary relocation of its embassy and consulate in Iraq to Stockholm for security reasons.

Priority on Safety

A spokeswoman for the Swedish Foreign Ministry said: “Safety is a priority. Embassy operations and staff have been temporarily relocated to Stockholm for security reasons.”

Expulsion of Swedish Ambassador and License Suspension

Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shaya al-Sudani announced the expulsion of Swedish Ambassador to Baghdad Jessica Svardström. Additionally, the Iraqi Media and Communications Authority announced the suspension of the license for the operation of the Swedish communications company Ericsson in Iraqi territory. This action came after Sweden allowed the burning of the Holy Quran and the Iraqi flag.

Extremist’s Destructive Protest

Iraqi-born Swedish extremist Sylvan Momika tore up the Iraqi flag, Koran, and photographs of prominent religious figures, including Sadrist leader Muqtada al-Sadr and Iranian tour guide Ali Khamenei, in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm yesterday Thursday.
