The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Sues Tesla for Racial Harassment
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, accusing Elon Musk’s electric car maker of violating federal law. The company is alleged to have tolerated widespread and ongoing racial harassment of its Black employees and subjected some workers to retaliation for opposing the harassment.
Tesla has not yet responded to the allegations.
The EEOC, the federal agency responsible for enforcing civil rights laws against workplace discrimination, announced its decision to sue Tesla on Thursday.
This is not the first legal action taken against Tesla for similar allegations. A state civil rights agency in California previously sued the company, and a jury ordered Tesla to pay about $3.2 million in damages to a Black former worker, Owen Diaz, who experienced racist discrimination while working there in 2015.
In a financial filing last year, Tesla disclosed that the EEOC had issued a cause finding against the company. Tesla attempted to resolve the matter through conciliation with the EEOC, but the process was unsuccessful, leading to the lawsuit announced on Thursday.
