The global aviation sector is classified as one of the fastest emitting sectors and one of the hardest to remove carbon sectors.

With passenger traffic expected to rise to 10 billion passengers by 2050, carbon dioxide emissions will exceed 21 gigatonnes.

This is because the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has developed several scenarios to reduce these emissions, the most important of which is the use of sustainable fuels.

Emirates has been experimenting with sustainable fuels since 2017 and is performing the first test flight in the Middle East and North Africa for one of its Boeing aircraft, one of whose engines runs on this fuel 100%.

Current approvals for the use of sustainable fuels in all aircraft are limited to blending up to 50% of conventional fuels, while full approval takes time.

Airlines plan to cut emissions by 65% by relying on green fuels, which means the aviation sector must invest about $1.4 trillion in green fuels by 2050.
