Data released by the UK Office for National Statistics today, Friday, showed that the country’s gross domestic product has not changed in the last three months of 2022.
The UK narrowly avoided a recession in 2022 after the economy saw zero growth between October and December, according to new data.
The economy contracted between July and September, but it fell 0.5% in December alone, due in part to strikes in the healthcare sector, trains and the Royal Mail.
“Public services were impacted in December by fewer GP surgeries and visits due to the impact of the strikes, as well as significantly lower school attendance,” said Darren Morgan, director of economic statistics at the Office for National Statistics, adding: “The lack of football in the Premier -league because of the World Cup and the mail strike caused a slowdown.
During 2022, GDP grew by 4%, the largest increase of any G7 country last year. However, this compares to growth of 7.6% the previous year and the UK economy is still 0.8% smaller than before the Covid pandemic.
