The European Parliament has announced that Speaker Roberta Metsola has instructed, according to a Belgian memorandum, to take urgent action to lift the immunity of two members of parliament implicated in corruption cases.
The European Parliament said in a statement that “Speaker Metsola has initiated an urgent procedure for lifting the immunity of two MEPs at the request of the Belgian judiciary.”
The first procedural steps have been taken, and Mitsola will make a motion to lift the immunity of two deputies during the next plenary session on January 16, after which the motion will be submitted to the legal commission for a decision.
“From the very first moment, the European Parliament has done everything in its power to assist in the investigation, and we will continue to ensure that there is no impunity,” Mitushla said in a statement.
She added: “Officers will find this parliament along with the law. We will do our best to fight corruption.”
Notably, the Brussels judiciary last month arrested MEP Eva Keily and other MPs in custody, accusing them of receiving large sums of money to influence decisions in Parliament.
After the investigation, the President of the European Parliament announced that she intends to deprive some members of Parliament of their duties due to their involvement in corruption cases.
