The Central Bank of Australia announced today, Thursday, that the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II will be removed from Australia’s five dollar bills.
According to the Central Bank of Australia, there will be drawings on the banknotes dedicated to the culture and history of the Aboriginal people.
“The Bank will consult with early Australian communities and develop a new design for the Australian $5 note. During the development and printing of new banknotes, which may take several years, $5 bills of the current design will be issued,” the bank said.
The central bank also emphasized that the decision to update the design of the five-dollar bill was made after consultations with the Australian government and has already been approved.
Australia is a member of the Commonwealth and is officially headed by King Charles III, represented by a Governor General. After the death of Elizabeth II, she declared a national day of mourning on September 8, 2022.
