The United Nations World Food Program requested $77 million on Friday to help 874,000 earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.
The Rome-based UN agency said: “The World Food Program is requesting $77 million to help with food rations and hot meals for a total of 874,000 people affected by the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.”
The organization said in a statement that the number in need of assistance “includes 284,000 newly displaced persons in Syria and 590,000 in Turkey, including 45,000 refugees and 545,000 internally displaced persons.”
About 24.4 million people in Syria and Turkey were affected by the quake, according to Turkish and UN officials.
Today, Friday, Turkish authorities said the death toll has exceeded 19,000 and the number of injured has reached more than 77,000.
The earthquake in Syria has killed more than 3,300 people, but according to rescuers, many people are still under the rubble.
