The number of foreign fighters linked to Ukraine is now between 1,000 and 3,000. Their numbers have dropped sharply since last summer, and the vast majority have chosen to return home.

This was reported today, Thursday, by the Washington Post newspaper, where it indicated that last spring it was announced in Kyiv that 20,000 people from more than 50 countries had arrived in Ukraine as volunteers, but “the vast majority of them apparently, returned to their countries before the summer.

The newspaper added: “It seems that many of them were more interested in taking pictures for publication on Instagram (a social network banned in the Russian Federation) than enduring the hardships of trench warfare, and others seemed very interested in turning the fantasy of a Call of Duty computer game into reality. .

And the newspaper added: “Some of them also faced serious allegations of robbery and sexual harassment, or were found to be simply hiding from prosecution for criminal offenses in their country.”

In an important aspect, the Washington Post report also said that this war discouraged many of the volunteers who arrived at the beginning.

“Even many Western veteran soldiers are distraught at the brutality of the fighting and the prospect of death, finding themselves in the middle of an artillery war without the air support they relied on in Iraq and Afghanistan,” she said.

The report says that, according to experts, about 100 foreign citizens died during the hostilities, and more than 1,000 were injured.
