Three People Killed in Clashes in Manipur, India
A Hindu newspaper reported that three people have been killed in new clashes in the Indian state of Manipur, which has seen sectarian clashes since May last year.
Details of the Incident
The newspaper quoted the local police as saying: “3 people, including a father and his son, were killed by militants in the Bishnupur district of Manipur last night. They were shot while they slept and then stabbed to death with swords.”
Background of the Clashes
A wave of violence and clashes erupted in Manipur last May after the Mitte tribe demanded official recognition in India.
These demands sparked protests from the Koki people, the state’s indigenous people, who organized a “tribal solidarity march” that led to riots.
Unrest Fueled by Disturbing Incident
The unrest in the state has been fueled by a video showing a mob of men leading naked Cookie women into a field where they are being raped.
The incident took place in Manipur on 4 May and came to light only recently when police arrested 6 suspects, including the instigator of the rape.
