Today, Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed its rejection of the recent statements of the European Union on the Eastern Mediterranean region and the Cyprus issue.
TRT quoted a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on what it considers to be the European Union’s “claims” against Turkey regarding democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
“ignoring our efforts”
The Foreign Ministry said the EU “ignored” Turkey’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Yesterday, on Tuesday, the Council of the European Union expressed its concern about the “growing decline in the areas of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights” in Turkey.
The statement calls on Turkey to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all EU members.
Relations with Russia
The European Union also expressed concern a few days ago that Turkey maintains a close partnership with Russia despite the war in Ukraine and tough Western sanctions against Moscow.
Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy coordinator, said in a letter to the European Parliament that the deepening of economic relations between Turkey and Russia is a “serious problem,” according to a report by the German group Funk Media on Sunday (December 11, 2022).
