British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office has announced that the British government will increase defense spending by £5bn ($6bn) over the next two years due to the conflict in Ukraine.

He noted that the article on the increase in the military budget will be reflected in the updated version of the British Integrated Review of Security, Defense and Foreign Policy, which will be published on 13 March.

The statement said £3bn ($3.6bn) would be used to develop a nuclear deterrence force, with the rest going to replenish stocks of ammunition and weapons to replace those sent to Ukraine.

In the long term, the UK plans to increase its military spending to 2.5% of GDP.

The statement said that the British military budget is currently £48.6bn ($58.4bn).
