On Thursday, the United Nations requested more than $1 billion to help more than 5 million people in Turkey over the next three months after this month’s devastating earthquake that killed more than 36,000 people in the country’s south.
Martin Griffiths, a UN aid coordinator who visited Turkey last week, said citizens are “going through unspeakable grief.”
“We must support them in the most difficult times and provide them with the support they need,” he said.
