South Korean President Yoon Sok-yeol has directed the Ministry of Unification to work to raise awareness of the human rights situation in North Korea both inside and outside the country.
“The unification of the two Koreas can happen suddenly, so we cannot achieve this if we are not ready,” said Kim Eun-hye, senior assistant to the president for press relations.
“It is especially necessary to educate our people so that they have a good understanding of the human rights situation and the political situation in North Korea,” he added.
Yoon gave instructions during a joint political briefing between the Ministry of Unification, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Human Resources.
Yoon explained that in order to achieve reunification, there would need to be changes in South Korea, North Korea, and surrounding areas.
He added, in the words of a presidential spokesman, “Please prepare with a sober assessment of things rather than an emotional approach.” Korea more deeply and make sure that our people and the countries around us have an accurate understanding of the reality of the North Korean people.”
