US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen plans to meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He to discuss issues related to the global economy and try to deepen communication between the two countries, a Treasury spokesman said.

On Monday, the official said Yellen would meet Liu in person for the first time in Zurich after three virtual meetings between the two.

He added that Yellen and Liu will exchange views on economic issues, as well as deepening contacts between Washington and Beijing.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, meeting in Bali in November on the sidelines of the G20 summit, vowed to “continue to responsibly manage competition between our two countries and explore potential areas of cooperation,” the U.S. State Department said for the time being.

A few weeks later, a senior US delegation led by Daniel Kreitenbrink, assistant secretary of state for East Asian affairs, and Laura Rosenberger, director of the China-Taiwan National Security Council, visited China to further discuss ways to improve relations.

The delegation’s task also included preparations for US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s upcoming visit to China, the first of its kind in four years.

Relations between Washington and Beijing deteriorated sharply during the administration of former US President Donald Trump, and this deterioration continued, albeit to a lesser extent, into the Biden era.

After the meeting in Bali, both Biden and Xi expressed their desire to reduce tensions between the two countries as the US President pointed out that there was no need for a new cold war.
